It is slightly confusing, if not disingenous, to refer to the Gulf of Mexico disaster in barrels of oil spilled (5m) and the latest Nigerian spill in gallons (2m), since it implies a false equivalence (in gallons, the Deepwater Horizon spill is ~200m). However the basic point is the same, even if just 1% of the US accident, it is only the latest in a long line of such incidents in Nigeria, and largely ignored.
Since we all use the oil, we in turn bear some responsibility for the price the Nigerians pay for it, so a bit more public awareness, if not outcry, is definitely in order.
